Description
A breast lift (mastopexy) procedure addresses sagging (ptotic) and uneven breasts, decreased breast volume and drooping nipples and stretched areolas, to recreate a more youthful shape and lift to your breasts. While the procedure does a good job of restoring a more youthful appearance, it rarely provides restored volume to the upper chest as the breast falls lower on the chest wall. It may be combined with an augmentation (either simultaneously or in a staged fashion) to restore more volume, especially on the upper chest wall, or may essentially be converted to a breast reduction in the case of too much breast volume, causing back and shoulder problems.
Virtually all women can at some point benefit from the procedure if so desired, as it addresses a natural result of aging on the breast. Pregnancy and breastfeeding, weight gain and loss, genetics and natural aging can predispose to needing this procedure.
Patients need to be clear whether they simply want a non-droopy appearance or more volume is needed as this plays a key role in the surgical plan.
Several thousands of these procedures are performed safely annually, and perhaps even more – in the hundreds of thousands – when unilateral procedures to symmetrize a smaller or altered breast particularly as a result of breast cancer reconstruction are factored in.
